What I like

The warmth. Don’t like sitting around a campfire at night because it’s too cold? Below freezing temps outside? The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer will change your world. These have kept me cozy during cold Bishop bouldering nights. I’ve worn them below freezing temps in the backcountry. They also make mosquito repellent and cold repellent for sunset and sunrise sessions on backpacking trips.

The weight. Weighing in at 10 oz, these are a fantastic luxury item for backpacking, especially if you run cold. I brought these with me on a 5 day backpacking trip in Mineral King. They came in super handy against chilly mornings and evenings, and against mosquitoes. It’s a pretty dang wonderful luxury item. And if it gets too warm, they make a nice pillow.

The leg zippers. The Ghost Whisperer Down Pants have zippers from the cuffs to the knees to make it easier to put on over shoes or boots.

What I don’t like

The zipper. The zipper on the Ghost Whisperer Pants suck. It’s a two-way zipper, but it usually gets stuck. Luckily, I sized up, so I can still pull them up and down over my hips. Sometimes I can get it unstuck, but it’s rare.

The fabric. The Whisperer 10D x 10D Ripstop fabric is so incredibly delicate. I had a Ghost Whisperer jacket many years ago, and not much has changed. If I’m sitting on the ground or on a rock with this, I always make sure there’s something between my bum and the surface. Can’t take any chances when these pants cost $250.

I purchased the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Down Pants for myself after being tired of freezing my bum off in Bishop every winter. They are not a cheap purchase, but for me, it’s been worth every penny. I’ve used them in every season from climbing trips to backpacking trips. They are absolutely a luxury and unnecessary item, but if you’re on the fence about purchasing, know that you will be the coziest person wherever you are.

Buy the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Pants for $250 through CampSaver. For a more affordable alternative, the REI Teton Fleece Pants provide adequate warmth.
