I’m not really a winter person. I like climbing more than anything. Cold, sunny days in the desert, fingers and toes frozen on the rock are my preferred winter thing. I can’t, however, turn down a good backpacking trip. With a sunny weather window this past weekend, it was the perfect opportunity to go backpacking in Mariposa Grove.

Death Valley is a gem of a national park. It attracts its fair share of tourists with popular roadside attractions like Zabriskie Point, Badwater Basin and the Mesquite Flats Sand Dunes. However, get off any of the popular trails or roads and you’ll find yourself with nary another person in sight. Death Valley is also home to plenty of rugged dirt roads to take you away from civilization. If you don’t have a dirt-road worthy car, rent a jeep with Farabee Jeeps and plan your escape.
It’s another wet winter for California. This means I’m staying closer to home because snow sports aren’t at the top of my to-do list. With rain in the forecast this past weekend, I took the opportunity to head back to Big Sur. I wanted to check out Calla Lily Valley at Garrapata State Park.
