Basic Technical Ice Climbing with SWS Mountain Guides

Basic Technical Ice Climbing SWS Mountain Guides review

You know when people buy Christmas presents for their significant others that they totally want for themselves? Yeah, guilty. I’m that person. When it comes to gift giving, I believe that experiences are so much better than physical items. Things break, get lost. Memories are forever.

This year for Christmas, I scoured the internet for a good deal on an adventure. I like to start my Christmas shopping early, so just happened to be browsing around and googling ice climbing courses in California when I came across SWS Mountain Guides. Checked their Yelp reviews. Googled some more. Then hit the jackpot. They were having a fall sale on their trips! 20% off everything! I whipped out my credit card and signed up for a class over MLK weekend.

A Quick Look: United By Blue Coffeehouse & Clothier Flagship

I had some time to kill while in Philly last month for Christmas. Wandered around Center City for a while before popping over to Old City to check out the United By Blue flagship location.

United By Blue, founded in 2010, believes in sales with a purpose. Everything they offer is responsibly made and the company removes one pound of trash from oceans and waterways through cleanups for each product sold. Located in an early 1900s building, their flagship store uses repurposed materials to create the open and homey environment that invites you in for a cup of coffee and retail therapy. The store serves ReAnimator Coffee, roasted locally in Philly. Ample seating and a comfy, sink-yourself-in couch offers space to catch up with friends or with work. Above the retail store is United By Blue headquarters! All the magic happens here.

Ebey’s Landing: Prairie Overlook to Beach

When Lee Jacobson tells you you’re going hiking, you’re going hiking. And to end 2014, hike is what we did. A motley crue of #hikerchat friends headed north to Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve to catch the sunset over the Olympic Peninsula.

Jessica from You Did What With Your Wiener was kind enough to pick Tara and me up from Seattle to whisk us by ferry to meet up with Lee and Terry. The sun was shining. The mountain was out. We soaked in the spectacular weather and drank ciders as the sun sank for the last time in 2014. There’s nothing quite like walking along the beach as the last light fades behind you with good company.

Mountain Loop Highway: Big Four Ice Caves

Happy New Year, friends! I wish there were words to adequately describe the awesomeness of how I kicked off the new year. I barely made it past midnight, but the next morning, I set off to see the Big Four Ice Caves with Lee, Tara, Mike, Terry and John.

It’s not the biggest adventure, or even the most badass, but the ice caves were a spectacular sight. The company, even better. Sometimes it’s not about the destination. Sometimes it’s just about who you’re with (or the journey, ha, ha). Cheers to 2015! Looking forward to hanging out with you all!
